Konkan Railway is celebrating its 27th foundation day on 15th Oct' 2017

Konkan Railway is a vital link between Mumbai and Mangalore, traversing through picturesque Western Ghats. It covers four States viz. Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka & Kerala. The entire stretch of its 740 KM  comprises of difficult & rugged terrain.
This geographical challenge was successfully tackled using latest technology in engineering field in early 90s. With more than 90 tunnls, about 2000 bridges and 564 deep cuttings , construction of Konkan Railway was an arduous task in 90s and shall be an Engineering marvel for long time to come.
On 15th October this year, Konkan Railway is celebrating its 27th foundation day with track record of  20 years of operational phase.
Konkan Railway has generated Operating Surplus from the day one of its Operational Phase. During the financial year 2016-17, Konkan Railway has achieved a Net Profit of     ` 61 Crs.  The Corporation has registered a growth of 69% in the annual turnover over last three years. The Project Revenue of Konkan Railway also registered significant growth during the year.  The turnover of company during the financial year 2016-17 was  ` 2152 Cr.
To fulfill the  demand of passengers & to provide faster and convenient connectivity along the west coast, two New Trains have been introduced in  2016-17 viz. Tejas Express between CSMT-KARMALI and Indore-Kochuveli (Weekly) Express. Further, to clear the extra rush during Ganapati Festival in 2017, Konkan Railway operated 254 trips of various  special trains.
Konkan Railway strives to provide  better passenger amenities to its passengers for a  comfortable and safe journey. As a part of this Endeavour Konkan Railway has installed escalators at Ratnagiri, Madgaon and Udupi. In addition to this, a travelator and Lift at Ratnagiri.
Konkan Railway has upgraded the passenger amenities at number of other stations also.   Moduler design cover shelters at platforms, toilets for disabled, upgraded waiting rooms with new benches, video wall, free Wi-Fi at 29 stations,  improvement in  platforms surface etc. to name the few.  Ethnic food stalls and E catering facilities for local cuisine has also been introduced.  As an innovative technology for disposal of human waste in eco-friendly manner bio-toilets have been installed at 11 stations.
Station up-gradation work has been completed at Chiplun, Kankavali, Kudal & Sawantwadi Terminus Phase-I and work of Sawantwadi Terminus Phase-II is in progress.
George Fernandes Institute of Tunnel Technology at Goa and Ramkrishna Hegde Institute for Skill Development at Udupi  are being set up by the corporation.  
Work of construction of 10 new Railway Stations on konkan Railway route is also in progress. These stations are
Indapur between Kolad & Mangaon,
Goregoan Road  between Mangaon & Veer,
Sape Wamane between Veer &  Karanjadi,
Kalbani between Diwankhavti &  Khed,
Kadwai between Aravali Road &  Sangameshwar,
Verawali between Adavali &  Vilawade,  
Kharepatan between Rajapur &  Vaibhavwadi,
Achirne between Vaibhawvadi & Nandgaon,
Mirjan between Gokarna &  Kumta, and,
Innanje station between Udupi &  Padbudri,
As a green and clean energy initiative,  Corporation has installed Solar Power Plant of 25 KWp  at Kudal Station, 20 KWp at  Sawantwadi, 7 KWp each at Thivim and Udupi, 2 KWp each at Khed, Chiplun & Kankavali stations. In addition to these stationary installations, Solar power plants of  9.5 KWp capacity have been installed on roof top of two passenger coaches. Work for 25 KWp Solar Power Plant at Chiplun & Kankavali are in process.  
In 2015-16, 729 employees were promoted out of which 37 nos were promoted as Executives. 7th Pay Commission & Voluntary Retirement Scheme  have been implemented. Women in Public Sector (WIPS ) Cell was made live on DISHA – Konkan Railway’s internal portal - in March 2016 for speedy redressal of grievances of women employees. Training in housekeeping, computer literacy and personality development is being imparted to staff across various grades.
Konkan Railway has actively participated in various cleanliness drives  a part of nationwide Swachhta Abhiyan to live up to the Motto of  Swachh Rail-Swachh Bharat. Special emphasis has been given to improve the cleanliness at  stations and in trains. In addition, a special focus is being given on quality of drinking water, swachh ahaar, cleaning of drains, adequacy of dustbins etc. During these campaigns intensive cleaning activity is undertaken at all the stations.
The various activities undertaken during this special drive in which Corporation had planted 1,04,000 saplings from April to September 2016 and Solar Power Plant of various capacity have been installed at various locations on Konkan Railway route.
Corporation took various initiatives for the upliftment of Konkan Region by way of providing more and more passenger amenities over Konkan Railway which has facilitated in making the journey more comfortable which includes capacity enhancement of KRCL line, route electrification, construction of additional ten new stations etc

Increase  in Authorized Equity Share Capital:
To boost the development of Konkan region on its Highmark, Ministry of Railways has taken a decision to Increase Authorised Equity Share Capital for providing more financial support to Konkan Railway.
On 16.12.2016 Ministry of Railway (MoR) has accorded Approval for increase of Authorized Equity Share Capital from ` 806.47 crore to ` 4,000 crore. Subsequently, shareholders of the Corporation at its meeting held on 28.02.2017 unanimously passed special resolution for increase in authorised equity share capital from ` 806.47 Cr to           ` 4,000 Cr for execution of various capital expenditure projects like
1)  Roha-Veer Part Doubling
2)  Route Electrification of Konkan Railway
3)  Doubling of Traffic Capacity of Konkan Railway
4)  Construction of New Crossing Stations and Additional Loop Lines
The total cost for executing these projects is of the order of around ` 7,500 crore and the projects are likely to be completed in a phased manner spanning about 5 years. Conversion of many halt stations into a crossing station and patch doubling will improve the operations and throughput which will ease the inconvenience and hardships being faced by the people in and around Konkan region and make their journey comfortable on Konkan Railway.
This will go a long way not only in benefiting the traveling passengers in general, but also contributing   significantly to the socio-economic development of the entire Konkan region, which would in turn, lead towards the growth of the nation.
Accordingly, all Shareholders will make equity infusion through Rights Issue of `3050 Cr in tranches for these infrastructure projects. Remaining cost will be finance through market borrowings.

Futuristic Rail connectivity / Infrastructure project on Konkan route:
Work of Doubling of Roha- Veer Section is in progress
Electrification work of Konkan Railway is in progress.
Jaigarh Digni Rail Link work  is in progress.
Work of Multi Modal Logistics Park  at Balli station (Goa) to handle domestic & EXIM container traffic is in progress.
Construction of freight siding for MRPL Mangalore is in progress.
Patch doubling of Konkan Railway : In Principle, Ministry of Railways has accorded the approval for the work of major capacity augmentation of Konkan Railway at approximate of cost of ` 4980 Crores and proposal is in the process of sanction.
