Energy Efficiency Measures on Konkan Railway

01-February-2018

In context of India’s commitment to reduce its carbon foot print, KRCL decided to reduce energy consumption in non-traction area by replacing all conventional energy in-efficient luminaires by the LED lights at all Railway stations, tunnels, offices and other service buildings. In this initiative and endeavour, KRCL has already replaced LED lights in 76 Km length of its tunnels. With this provision, visibility and clarity of signals provided inside tunnels has significantly improved enhancing the safety, besides increasing illumination level by 200-300% with significant saving of electrical energy.
Taking further steps in the direction of  energy conservation it has been decided to replace old energy in efficient luminaires by LED lights and old non star rated AC units by star rated super energy efficient AC units at stations, offices and other service buildings. For this, Konkan Railway has  entered  into an agreement with M/s. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). M/s.EESL would provide technical and/or financial support for building the project through the ESCO model, wherein the resultant savings from projects will be used to repay the investments made by M/s. EESL. This initiative is expected to give 10-15% energy saving in monthly energy bills. The project is estimated to cost about Rs.4.0 Cr and targeted to be completed by March 2018.
