KONKAN RAILWAY ADOPTS GREEN TECHNOLOGY FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

Taking steps towards environment conservation and to solve growing challenge of waste management, Konkan Railway has installed an Organic Waste Composting machine at its residential colony at Seawoods, Navi Mumbai which will enable it to manage by itself all the organic and green waste being produced in the colony. The composting machine was inaugurated on 25th January, 2015 by CMD of KRCL, Shri Bhanu Prakash Tayal. Depending upon the results, Konkan Railway plans to install the system at the major stations on its route and its residential colonies along its route.

Konkan Railway’s residential colony at Seawoods has 142 official quarters with about 500-600 residents occupying these. It has lush green lawns and several trees in its premises. About 200 to 250 kg of garbage and green waste is produced daily from the colony which is picked up once a day by the garbage vehicle of the Municipal Corporation. The green waste is disposed off separately by Konkan Railway as it cannot be mixed with the regular garbage. Since about 150-200 kg of green waste is produced per day the waste composting machine will enable KRCL to produce its own organic manure for use in its lawns and plants. This will also completely do away with the practice of dumping garbage for further disposal by civic system.

The system is economical, environment friendly and is a step in the direction of making the residential colony self-sustained. Once the garbage and green waste is disposed in the composting machine, within 15 minutes it converts the waste into homogenized flow-able raw compost ready for curing. Upon placing this in the curing system, in just 10 days the compost is ready for use in gardens.
