Enhancement in carrying capacity of wagons for RORO service over Konkan Railway

Konkan Railway’s Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) services, introduced in January 1999, is a unique and cost-effective freight solution that enables loaded trucks to be transported directly on railway wagons, reducing fuel consumption, driver fatigue, road congestion and carbon emissions. This service is currently operated on Konkan Railway route, offering a seamless and efficient logistics alternative to truck movement through the challenging Western Ghats terrain.

In line with its commitment to improve freight transportation efficiency, Konkan Railway has approved an enhancement in the permissible carrying capacity of Ro-Ro wagons from 50 tons to 57 tons.

Each Ro-Ro rake will now consist of:

  • 15 BRN wagons capable of carrying trucks loaded up to 57 tons, and

  • 35 BOXN wagons capable of carrying trucks up to 50 tons.

The first Ro-Ro service utilizing the newly enhanced 57-ton capacity wagons will commence from Wednesday, 05th November 2025.

This enhancement will facilitate the movement of heavier commercial vehicles, enabling:

  • Greater load flexibility for transporters

  • Improved operational efficiency

The increased capacity is expected to particularly benefit truckers and industries transporting Iron & Steel, Marble, Tiles, Construction materials and other heavy consignments over the Konkan Railway network.

Truckers carrying loads beyond 50 tons are advised to contact the booking office at Kolad - 9004476090 & Surathkal - 9686656159 for booking details and operational assistance.

Konkan Railway remains committed to supporting trade and industry through innovation in freight solutions and strengthening connectivity along the West Coast corridor.
