Konkan Railway celebrates Independence Day - 2025
Konkan Railway joined the nation in celebrating the spirit of freedom and patriotism with great enthusiasm and pride. On the occasion of India’s Independence Day, Shri Santosh Kumar Jha, Chairman & Managing Director, Konkan Railway, hoisted the National Flag and inspected the Railway Protection Force (RPF) contingent at Konkan Rail Vihar, Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
Addressing the gathering of employees and their families, Shri Santosh Kumar Jha extended his warm wishes on the occasion of Independence Day. He lauded the dedicated and consistent efforts of Konkan Railway’s workforce, whose commitment has been instrumental in driving the organisation’s growth and service excellence. He also highlighted several notable achievements of the Corporation in the past year. Few of the milestones are listed as under:
- On 6 June 2025, Hon’ble Prime Minister visited the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project and inaugurated two engineering marvels, the world’s tallest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge and Indian Railway’s first cable-stayed bridge, the Anji Bridge. On the occasion, the Hon’ble Prime Minister also dedicated the newly constructed 63 km Katra - Sangaldan section of the USBRL Project to the nation and flagged off Vande Bharat Express services between Katra - Srinagar and Srinagar - Katra.
The work of Katra to Dharam section of this project was entrusted to Konkan Railway for execution (total Km 52.20 Km at an approx cost of ₹18,000Cr). In addition to the above, Konkan Railway constructed 171 km length of roadway to provide access to the Katra-Dharam section.
- From January to July 2025, Konkan Railway operated a total of 11,751 mail/passenger trains and 3,861 goods trains.
- A total of 174 Summer Special trains were successfully operated over Konkan Railway route.
- Konkan Railway has announced a unique new service for passengers - Ro-Ro Car Transportation service between Kolad - Verna section from 23/08/2025 to 11/09/2025, with a stoppage at Nandagaon for loading/unloading of vehicles.
- The first Laterite rake was loaded from Zarap on 21.07.2025 and a total of 2 rakes have been loaded till date.
- As of today, 80–90% of train operations on Konkan Railway have transitioned to electric traction. Between January 1st and July 15th, 2025, this shift has resulted in an estimated fuel cost saving of ₹144 crore.
- For the first time on Konkan Railway, a dedicated facility for women travelling alone, Pink Bubbles was launched at Madgaon, Murdeshwar, and Bhatkal stations on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March 2025.
- 66 runaway children, including 24 minor girls, were rescued from trains and railway premises, and safely handed over to their parents or Child Helpline.
- Konkan Railway secured new projects worth ₹3,860.99 crore, of which 14 projects valued at ₹1,619.50 crore were awarded in the current financial year.
- The Government of India has granted environmental clearance for the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi Tunnel Road Project.
- For providing rail connectivity to the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, the State Government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) valued at ₹1,482.92 crore.
- A new recruitment notification for 79 posts was issued on 4 July 2025, reinforcing Konkan Railway’s commitment to strengthening its workforce and creating employment opportunities.
- Konkan Railway has been honoured with several prestigious awards this calendar year, including the Disaster Resilience Award; Excellence in Infrastructure Development Award at the Governance Now 11th PSU Awards; ET Infra Award for Outstanding Bridge/Tunnel Construction in Rail; and multiple accolades at the National Awards for Excellence 12th Edition, namely Best PSU in Research and Innovation, Best Performance in Procurement of Goods and Services, and Best PSU in Training and Development. In addition, the Ministry of Home Affairs conferred two Regional Rajbhasha Awards. With these recognitions, KRCL has received a total of 19 awards from last year till date.
- So far, KRCL has signed MoUs with over 25 organisations across diverse domains such as engineering, operations and management, training, business development, and energy, further strengthening its collaborative reach and technical capabilities.
The celebration of Independence Day was marked with the same enthusiasm and patriotic fervour across Konkan Railway’s Ratnagiri and Karwar regions, where flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, and employee participation reflected the unity and pride of the organisation. The occasion reaffirmed Konkan Railway’s unwavering commitment to serving the nation by delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable rail connectivity, contributing to regional growth and national progress.
