Konkan Railway Celebrates 35 Glorious Years of Service to the Nation

Konkan Railway Corporation Limited proudly celebrated its 35th Foundation Day on 15th October 2025 at the CIDCO Exhibition & Convention Center, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The event was graced by Shri Santosh Kumar Jha, Chairman & Managing Director, along with Shri Rajesh M. Bhadang, Director (Finance), Shri Sunil Gupta, Director (Operation & Commercial) and Shri Rajeev Kumar Mishra, Director (Way & Works). 

Shri Santosh Kumar Jha, CMD / KRCL reflected on the Corporation’s 35-year journey and lauded the collective efforts and unwavering dedication of employees that have shaped KRCL’s growth and success.  The Directors also shared insights from their respective domains, emphasizing KRCL’s continued focus on modernization, safety, sustainability, and strategic expansion.

Highlighting the year’s achievements, Shri Santosh Kumar Jha, CMD / KRCL outlined the notable accomplishments across operations, technological advancement, railway infrastructure, and passenger and freight services. The key milestones of the year are as follows:

On June 6, 2025, the Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated the Katra–Sangaldan section of the USBRL project constructed by Konkan Railway and flagged off Vande Bharat trains between Katra and Srinagar. The project, which includes the world’s highest Railway Arch Bridge - Chenab bridge and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge -  Anji Khad Bridge, stands as a landmark achievement in global railway engineering.

In FY 2024–25, Konkan Railway achieved a total revenue of ₹4,202.67 crore and a profit of ₹137.69 crore, marking the third consecutive profitable year post-COVID. The Corporation secured new projects worth ₹4,157 crore, including ₹3,000 crore in electrification works.

Environmental clearance has been granted and LOA has been issued for the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppady Tunnel Road Project, valued at ₹1,341 crore. The Kerala government has approved DPR worth ₹1,482.92 crore for rail connectivity to Vizhinjam International Seaport. Work has also commenced on new railway line projects in Odisha (Khurda Road - Bolangir board gauge railway line) and Gujarat & Rajasthan - Taranga Hill - Abu Road new board gauge railway line.

On September 10, 2025, Northern Railway awarded KRCL a ₹952 crore contract for the maintenance of engineering, S&T, and electrical assets on the newly constructed Katra–Banihal section of the USBRL project for an initial period of five years.

During Ganesh Utsav, Konkan Railway operated a record 381 special trains, carrying over 9 lakh passengers. For the first time, a Ro-Ro car transport service was introduced along the route, and six fully equipped FTR Mahakumbh special trains from Madgaon to Prayagraj facilitated the travel of 4,783 devotees.

Passenger amenities received focused attention, with ₹18.66 crore allocated for FY 2025–26 and ₹105 crore planned over the next three years. Key infrastructure improvements included converting the goods line at Chiplun into a passenger loop line, extending platforms at Kankavli and Thivim, commissioning a new foot overbridge at Madgaon, and launching a Rail Arcade with 21 food outlets and restaurants at Madgaon station. Façade beautification works at 12 stations were completed under an MoU with Maharashtra PWD at ₹100 crore, and beautification of Ratnagiri station is ongoing under a ₹45 crore MoU with MIDC.

A new KRCL mobile application was also launched, providing essential travel information, women-centric safety features, freight business tools, and disabled-friendly functionality, available on both iOS and Android platforms.

Konkan Railway was awarded the “Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar – Second Prize” for excellence in official language implementation. Konkan Railway has been conducting the operations of  NARAKAS - Navi Mumbai Rajbhasha Karyaanvayan Samiti for the past 08 years for which it received the First Place in “NARAKAS Rajbhasha Samman Puraskhar” and “Sarvashreshta NARAKAS Samman” Shield along with an appreciation certificate. Konkan Railway has received the “NARAKAS Rajbhasha Samman Puraskhar” for the seventh time.

As part of the Foundation Day celebrations, Konkan Railway honoured employees for their exceptional contributions through the prestigious Foundation Day Awards, recognizing dedication, high performance, and exemplary service. An ex-gratia of ₹17,951 was disbursed to 5,104 employees, reflecting the Corporation’s appreciation for their commitment and hard work. The ceremony highlighted achievements across departments and concluded with a musical evening, bringing together employees, families, and guests in a joyous celebration of KRCL’s legacy. 

Building on 35 years of transformative progress, Konkan Railway remains steadfast in its mission to provide safe, efficient, and sustainable rail services. KRCL continues to expand operations, enhance passenger services, develop railway infrastructure, strengthen freight operations, and contribute to India’s growth, while upholding its vision as a pioneering surface transport company and infrastructure solution provider.
