Signal & Telecommunication (S&T) Department

Signal & Telecommunication (S&T) Department is responsible for installation and maintenance of Signalling systems for safe and speedy movement of trains and Telecommunication systems required for smooth railway operations and other business functions.

1. Signalling Systems – Salient Features

• Uniform MACL (Multiple Aspect Colour Light) signalling at all train crossing stations.
• High-speed Four Aspect MACL signalling with run-through facility via loop lines from Kolad to Thokur section.
• Panel Interlocking (PI) at 48 stations and Electronic Interlocking (EI) at 20 stations.
• Data Logger system at all stations for safety, monitoring and predictive maintenance.
• Fuse Failure Alarm System (FFAS) with auto changeover facility.
• Biometric identification for authorized staff operating signalling panels and relay rooms.
• Monitoring of opening and closing of Level Crossing Gates.
• Integrated Voice & Data Services at Tunnel Ventilation Control Rooms.
• Replacement of Block Instruments with UFSBI and BPAC.
• Electronic Interlocking commissioned at 20 stations.
• Automatic Block Signalling commissioned in Madgaon–Majorda section.
• Patch doubling commissioned between Roha–Veer.
• Doubling commissioned in Madgaon–Chandor, Majorda–Cansaulim and Thokur–Jokatte sections.
• Built-in Block Instrument commissioned in UD–INJ section.

2. Telecommunication Systems – Salient Features

• Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) and Quad cable communication network across Konkan Railway.
• KR-Net supports indigenously developed Railway applications.
• RailTel commercially utilizes KRCL OFC infrastructure.
• Communication network supports control, administrative and data circuits.
• Quad cable supports Block Instruments, LC Gate telephones and emergency sockets.
• Telephone network integrated with Indian Railways.
• Communication provided for PRS, FOIS, COIS, TMS and RailNet.
• Emergency sockets provided at every kilometre.
• Help Point Telephones installed in long tunnels.
• Wi-Fi facility available at 60 stations.
• Electronic Train Reservation Chart provided at Udupi station.
• IP Based Video Surveillance System provided at 72 stations.
• Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) implemented at all stations.
• VoIP based Control Communication installed at all stations.
• SCADA migrated to IP-based MPLS network.
• Video recording facility provided in Station Master and Panel rooms at all 68 stations.

3. Multi-Skilled Cadre

To achieve economy of operations, the Signal and Telecom cadres have been merged into a multi-skilled cadre. The department also maintains KR-Net, Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), and associated communication networks.
